The Unknown Warrior Project
June 2009
The frame plates for new build steam locomotive, number 45551 " The Unknown Warrior" have now been drilled by The Boro' Foundry.
Over 300 holes were precision drilled on each frame plate from drawings provided by draughtsman Pete Rich. These were then converted to CAD format by Neil Herbert of Boro Foundry which enabled the automated drilling process to take place. Before the drilling commenced, the drawings were meticulously checked to ensure accuracy against the original LMS drawings dating from the 1930's.
Machine shop manager Neil Hunt said, " We are delighted to have worked on the frame plates for the " Uknown Warrior". The Boro Foundry is well placed to assist the heritage and new build steam movement and yet again we have proven we can deliver precision engineering for specialised projects such as the LMS-Patriot Project".
David Bradshaw, LMS-Patriot Chairman added, " Thanks to the superb work of the Boro Foundry, and the excellent drawings from Pete Rich, we are now in a position to take the newly drilled frame plates to the Llangollen Railway Works for assembly to begin. Drag boxes are about to be ordered and we are currently preparing new drawings for the frame stretchers, some of which will be cast and some fabricated.
The LMS-Patriot Project is appealing to steam enthusiasts and the public for donations, both large and small, and is inviting supporters to contribute on a monthly basis by setting up a standing order. An initial target of £1.25 million has been set.
